Like all dogs, Emmy wanted someone to love her and care for her, have food in her belly with a comfortable place to sleep and a sense of joy and play in her life. However, she was chained all her life by a dog hoarder until she and some 20 other dogs were taken in by an animal shelter. Inexplicably, someone came and adopted her even though “she had every parasite known to man” including the often fatal heart worm. With her spirit so wounded and a distrust of humans deeply ingrained in her psyche it has been a long and winding road to a normal dog’s life. Critical to her successful journey was Lisa’s knowledgeable work and sensitive demeanor that set us on the right path. This being our first rescue dog, and a deeply troubled one at that, we were clueless as to what we were in for. However, we soon began to see Emmy blossom in Lisa’s class. Before the end, she was among the best in the class as she became so eager to please. Today, we have a well adjusted, loving and extremely loyal dog that we attribute largely to Lisa and her work with all of us. Thank you Lisa.

We hired Lisa Hollander (owner/trainer) of Dog Gone Proud for a beginner dog obedience class. Lisa offers a variety of dog training courses, from beginner to advanced, as well as special circumstances, problem cases, etc. She teaches group or private lessons; we hired her for private lessons in our home because our schedule varies. We paid $349 for six lessons of an hour and a half each, to take place once a week. We have a young mixed breed shelter dog, aged ten months at the start of the training.
From the beginning of the training to the graduation, Lisa was a pleasure to work with. She clearly told us about what the training would involve, and helped us to understand the commitment to regular practice and consistency we would need to achieve success. She provided us with a written agreement, as well as a guidebook containing tips for bringing a new puppy/dog into our home and many of the skills and exercises we would be learning.
In each training session, Lisa came to our house on time, and was very professional but also warm and caring. She would tell us about the skills we would cover, she demonstrated them, and then coached us as we learned the skills. We learned basics like sit, lay down, stand, come (recall), wait, stay, loose leash walking, patience and focus, owners as leaders, drop it, leave it, calm introductions with people and other dogs, and more.
One thing we really like about Lisa's style (and part of the reason we decided to hire her) is that she focuses on positive reinforcement training, which really makes the bond between the owners and the dog stronger. We also really appreciated that she was willing to talk about specific questions, concerns, and some annoying problems we were having with our young pup. We could easily reach her by email or phone, and she was very detailed in her coaching and ideas. We had a great experience, learned a ton, and still have things we can work on and learn. We might also hire Lisa for additional training (intermediate, advanced, canine good citizen, etc.) We recommend her for people that want quality training from an experienced dog lover that truly cares about her work. Thanks Lisa!
